Getting cheeky

Palma Kolansky for Neiman Marcus

Ah blush! It’s a must for looking fresh and alive. A sign of youth, passion, health, love, activity and joy, no wonder so many products compete to help us fake a flushed glow. My favorites create a natural-looking blush– a modern twist on cherub-cheek. Master portrait artists knew how to paint the perfect, angelic flush and I have spent years trying to replicate their work. Now I think I have it. And if you follow these steps, so will you.

Different Techniques
  1. Powder blush works for everyone. I love to apply it with a large powder brush. Dip the brush in a pinky coral shade (a universally pretty tone) and apply on the apples of the cheeks. Blending is key. Banish harsh lines and splotches. For more drama, sweep blush along the temples and forehead.
  2. Cream blush is very natural and looks great on smooth skin. After foundation, apply cream blush by stippling lightly on the apples of the cheeks and along the cheekbones. Blend with a sponge to a natural flush. Follow with a light dusting of translucent powder to set the cream to last all day.
  3. Cheek stains are amazing because they do not budge, look the most natural and are great for women who prefer a “no-makeup” look. Apply on the apples of the cheeks with your fingers and rub in circular motions. Work quickly because stains dry in seconds and do not need to be set with powder. I like to rub a little on lips, too.
  4. Bronzers are pretty on everyone and much safer than the dreaded suntan. To bronze, apply on the apples, cheekbones, temples and a little on the forehead, nose and chin. Then go back and apply a little pinky coral color to the apples. This is a major celeb trick I use, because bronzer alone can look a bit muddy and the bright color on the apples gives you that life-loving glow. Outstanding!
